'The Collaborative Network for
the Rehabilitation of Andaman Communities and Natural Resources'
has mobilized field-based taskforces to provide rapid assistance
and conducted preliminary damage and loss assessments. The
destruction of housing, fishing boats and fishing gears, and
the death of hundreds of small-scale fisher-folk, has taken
away communities' livelihoods.
However, many communities have been able
to establish recovery mechanisms, based around new or existing
community organizations. These community organizations are
able to facilitate the immediate relief process, organize
the repair of fishing boats and fishing gears, and begin drafting
community-based natural resource rehabilitation plans.
In working with the small-scale fisher-folk
the network has identified some significant marginalized groups,
and proposed a number of implementation approaches and implementation
phases. The network is also encouraging collaboration with
academia, the private sector and the government.
