The Southern Network: The
Save Andaman Network
The Southern network is known
as 'The Coalition Network for Andaman Coastal Community Support',
or more briefly 'The Save Andaman Network'. It is composed
primarily of 6 local organizations, all of which have been
working for some time with small-scale fisher-folk communities
in the South.
Because of its history of working with small-scale
fisher-folk communities, the Southern network is solely focused
on providing assistance to these communities, and not to any
other marginalized groups.
The Nationwide Network: The Collaborative
Network
The Nationwide network is known as 'The Collaborative
Network for the Rehabilitation of Andaman Communities and
Natural Resources', and incorporates the 'Taskforce for Southern
Community and Ecological Recovery' in the Central region.
It is a much larger network of over 40 national organizations,
some of which have general development agendas, with others
focusing on specific issues.
As well as working with small-scale fisher-folk
communities, the Nationwide network is also addressing the
problems faced by a number of other marginalized groups including
women, children and migrant workers.
How the Two Networks Are Linked
Both networks have a degree of autonomy.
They are both capable of developing tsunami-relief proposals
and attracting funding for such proposals.
The two networks are linked in part by broadly
shared aims, notably with regards to providing assistance
to small-scale fisher-folk communities. But, in more concrete
terms, the two networks are linked because they share a common
secretariat - the Sustainable Development Foundation. This
legally registered NGO is coordinating the activities of both
networks, and monitoring the receipt and disbursement of funds
to ensure financial accountability.
