In Phuket Province, the affect of the tsunami on the coastal communities ranged from moderate to severe. There are altogether 6 villages where both houses and fishing boats are severely damaged (346 houses, 580 boats are destroyed). As usual, the Save Andaman Network has been seeking collaboration and support from the local partners. These include the community organizations and governmental organizations namely the Community Development Institute, Thai Community Foundation, Network of Writers, private sector, kind support from general public both Thai citizen and foreigners. All of the support aim to reach the affected communities directly.

In Phuket Province, there are 5 Tambons in 3 Ampurs that are affected by the tsunami. The preliminary relief support on repairing fishing boats and gears that were given to the affected communities derived mainly from fund-raising among the network both at national and international level. This support was given in the form of donation rather than through revolving fund as practiced in the other provinces because the communities do not have a revolving fund set up in their communities yet, thus might not be able to service the loans. However, after April when the repairing activities are completed, the community will begin to formulate a long-term rehabilitation plan.

Sunday 16th January 2005

Baan Rawai

A village composed of Mor-gan and U-rak-ra-woy communities. A total of 62 fishing boats were damaged. Of these, 9 fishing boats have been rebuilt, 35 fishing boats need minor repairs and 18 boats need extensive repairs.

Fishing boat repairmen from Koh Yao Noi in Phang Nga province, who arrived in the village on Friday 7th January 2005, have almost finished repairing the 35 fishing boats that sustained minor damage. Once finished, they will move on to Baan Siray. A further 8 fishing boat repairmen, allocated by 'The Network of the Traditional Fisher-folk of Trang', began repairing the 18 extensively damaged fishing boats on Wednesday 12th January 2005.

Baan Siray

In this U-rak-ra-woy village, 36 houses were severely damaged and need extensive repair, a further 27 houses need some degree of repair. All of their 47 fishing boats have been completely destroyed.

Presently only house repair, and not fishing boat repair, can be supported. However, on completing their work in Baan Rawai, the fishing boat repairmen from Koh Yao Noi in Phang Nga province will begin supporting fishing boat repair in Baan Siray.
