Satun was moderately affected by the tsunami with no death being reported. Nonetheless, as much as 599 fishing boats and 33 houses were destroyed. Since the tsunami, Save Andaman Network helped the communities in allocating 5 boatyards and contributed to the community revolving fund. At the current stage, 87 boats have been repaired, leaving another 79 to be worked on.


Sunday 13th February 2005

Save Andaman Network has provided assistance and financial support to establish boatyards where boats and fishing gears can be repaired in 16 villages of 6 Tambons which are under 4 Ampurs. The affected communities which have already been formed as Satun Small-Scale Fisherfolk Society before the tsunami has contacted Save Andaman Network and requested a total amount of 2,000,000 baht to support them. Under this amount, the proposal aims to earmark 144,336 baht for contribution towards local revolving fund for repairing vessels and fishing gears, while 258,600 baht would be utilised in establishing 2 boatyards in Ban Bor Jed Look Moo 1, Tambon Pak Nam in Ampur La Ngu and Ban Hua Hin Moo 1, Tambon La Ngu in Ampur La Ngu. The management of revolving fund and the operation of the boatyards are responsibility of Satun Small-Scale Fisherfolk Society together with the Small-Scale Fisherfolk's Saving Group of Ban Hua Hin and Small-Scale Fisherfolk's Saving Group of Ban Bor Jed Look. The Executive Committee of Save Andaman Network has reviewed the proposal and agreed to contribute 2,000,000 baht which will be managed according to the activities proposed by the community.

Between the 15th - 31st January, 2005, 750,642 baht was contributed towards the local revolving fund and has already reached 70 families to help in repairing fishing boats and fishing gears. Additionally, 402,936 baht was spent on setting up shipyard and purchasing of boat repairing equipment as well as 1,140 baht was spent on supporting coordination expenses incurred under these activities. The total support given to Satun Province is 1,154,718 baht.

Tambon La-ngoo, Tambon Pak Nam; Tambon Kor Sarai; Tambon Sakorn; Tambon Kon Klan

'The Network of the Traditional Fisher-folk of Satun' has surveyed member villages and other coastal villages in 4 of Satun's ampurs. Altogether 33 villages have been affected: 21 fishing boats have been severely damaged and need to be rebuilt, 436 fishing boats have been less severely damaged and are repairable, 192 fishing boat engines have been damaged and 622 fishing gears have been destroyed.

'The Network of the Traditional Fisher-folk of Satun' has established service outlets in a number of villages to facilitate the repair of the less severely damaged fishing boats and fishing gears.

The network is supporting the construction of 2 boatyards as proposed by 'The Small-scale Fisher-folk of Satun' and the committee of the 'Baan Bor Jed Look and Baan Pak Bara Community Savings Group'. The boatyards will be located in these last two villages, in ampur La-ngoo, Satun province. The boatyards expect to serve 16 villages in 5 tambons: tambon La-ngoo and tambon Pak Nam in ampur La-ngoo; tambon Kor Sarai in ampur Muang; tambon Sakorn in ampur Thapae; tambon Kon Klan in ampur Thung Wha.
