Thursday 31st March 2005
Trang Province was affected moderately by
the tsunami, except Muuk and Libong Island where the destruction
of boats and houses was considerable. As a result of this,
865 small-scale fishing boats, 126 houses were destroyed.
The relief and rehabilitation activities have been conducted
in Trang through the collaboration between the member networks
under Save Andaman Network, the local fisherfolk organization
called Trang Small-Scale Fisherfolk Society.
This community organization has played a
critical role even before the tsunami struck particularly
on coastal resource conservation and rehabilitation. After
the tsunami struck, they became the key body in conducting
a damage survey and coordinating with community members, local
authorities and the Federation of Southern Fisherfolk (which
is national network of the Small-Scale Fisherfolk in the 13
provinces) in mobilizing all resources and relief efforts
for the affected fishing households in Trang Province.
Sunday 13th February 2005
Save Andaman Network has provided assistance
and financial support to establish boatyards for repairing
fishing boats and fishing gears for 17 villages in 7 Tambons
and 4 Ampurs. The assistance being distributed from the 11th
January - 9 February, 2005 was concentrated on repairing fishing
boats and purchasing new fishing gears by supporting the revolving
fund of 4,060,000 baht, plus 450,000 baht for setting up 4
boatyards (1 boatyard in Ban Ta Sa Moo 4, 2 boatyards in Ban
Kor Muuk Moo 2, 1 boatyards in Makam and Hua Non Gulf and
1 boatyards in Ban Ba Tu Pu Ta). A total support that has
been channeled in Trang is 4,510,046 baht. The Trang Small-Scale
Fisherfolk Society is managing the revolving fund and repairing
activities in collaborating with the Coordination Unit for
the Tsunami-Affected Small-Scale Fisherfolk in 7 areas.
Under this amount of money, 1 permanent boatyard
was set up in Libong Island and costed 250,000 baht and 893,910
baht was contributed towards the local revolving fund to support
the repairing of fishing boats activities. Additionally, 1
set of boatyard equipment was purchased, costed 296,366 baht.
Therefore, total amount of budget spent to support small-scale
fishers in Libong Island is 1,440,276 baht.
In Muuk Island where 183 boats are destroyed,
200,000 baht was given to set up 1 boatyard. Additionally,
the network has also contributed 817,000 baht towards the
community's revolving fund which will be managed to ensure
a repairing and repurchasing of fishing gears. Altogether,
total support to Muuk Island provided by Save Andaman Network
is 1,017,000 baht. Aside from the support received from the
network, the communities have also been assisted by Yadfon
Association at the sum of 100,000 baht for fixing boats and
another 100,000 for fixing and purchasing new fishing gears.
Sunday 16th January 2005
General
'The Small-scale Fisher-folk Society in Trang'
has surveyed member villages and other coastal villages in
4 ampurs and 1 provisional district in Trang. Altogether 34
villages have been affected: 34 houses have been destroyed,
22 fishing boats have been irretrievably damaged, 285 fishing
boats have been less severely damaged and are repairable,
666 aquaculture floating baskets and 13,365 fishing gears
have been destroyed.
Baan Koh Muk
(Moo 2, Tambon Koh Libong, Ampur Kan Tang)
Some 31 houses have been completely destroyed,
a further 52 houses have been damaged but are repairable.
As yet, there are no accurate reports of the number of fishing
boats damaged. The tsunami impacted 20 families particularly
badly.
To date only 200 fishing boats have been
repaired due to funding constraints. Villagers whose fishing
boats are still in a state of disrepair are being taken to
sea aboard their neighbors' fishing boats. The network has
also provided assistance to 268 households via the 'Baan Koh
Muk Small-scale Fisher-folk Savings Group'. A boatyard has
been constructed and used to repair 77 fishing boats.
Baan Sa Tae
(Moo 4, Tambon Ta Sae, Haad Sam Ran Sub-district)
The tsunami affected 33 households and 15
fishing boats.
The network has supported the community savings
group's purchase of 3 new fishing boat engines.
Baan Ba Tu Pu Tae
(Moo 4, Tambon Koh Libong, Ampur Kan Tang)
Immediate assistance will be given to help
repair 24 fishing boats: the community savings group has requested
support to purchase wood to make repairs. The repair of fishing
boats is currently being facilitated by the presence of a
mobile boatyard provided by Yanma Limited. The community savings
group has also established a permanent boatyard through the
support of 'The 14th October Foundation'. The boatyard has
repaired 119 boats from 6 villages in tambon Koh Libong, ampur
